This entry is testament that it’s a ridiculously small world — or that fellow travelers in the struggle travel together. To the right of Libbie’s story are the links to the story about my mother, Jean Birkenstein Washington. And not quite as obvious here is that Libbie’s husband, Don West, was the photographer at the Bay State Banner in Boston for many years — including when I was the managing editor in the 1990s (and he and I continue to contribute to the Banner today.)

Don has chronicled similar struggles in Boston, and now it’s quite possible that Libbie and I, or certainly members of my family, marched together many years ago.

A wonderful virtual reunion and full circle. Thank you again, Kartemquin folks, for bringing it to the world.
